Q-Sort Study: Attitudes Toward AI
Estimated time: 25–35 minutes. You can work at your own pace and do not need to finish in one sitting (your progress is held in this browser tab — please keep it open).
Instructions
You will be given a set of statements that describe different feelings people may have when thinking about artificial intelligence (AI). There are no right or wrong answers. We are interested only in your personal emotional experience.
First, read through all of the statements carefully. Begin by sorting them into three broad piles:
- Statements that feel most like how you feel about AI
- Statements that feel somewhat like how you feel
- Statements that feel least like how you feel
Next, you will place each statement into the Q-sort grid provided, which ranges from “Most like how I feel” to “Least like how I feel.” You must place a specific number of statements in each column. This means you may have to make difficult choices between statements that feel similarly true or untrue for you.
Please focus on how the statements make you feel emotionally, not on whether you believe they are factually correct or socially desirable.
When you are finished, you will be asked a few short follow-up questions about why you placed certain statements at the extremes of the grid.
For example, if your initials are J.S. and your favorite number is 7, enter JS7. This keeps your responses anonymous while letting us match your sort to any follow-up.
Step 1 — Sort into three rough piles
Drag each card (or tap a card, then tap a pile) into one of the three piles. Don't worry about getting it perfect — this is just a first pass to help you think about the statements. You'll arrange them precisely on the grid in the next step.
Cards to sort (36)
Most like how I feel
Somewhat like how I feel
Least like how I feel
Step 2 — Place every card into the grid
Each column has a fixed number of slots — you must fill all 36 slots exactly. Cards are color-coded by the pile you placed them in. Move cards by dragging them, or tap a card and tap a slot to swap.
Unplaced cards (36)
Step 3 — Follow-up questions
A few short questions about your sort and your background. All fields except where noted are optional.
Thank you.
Your responses have been saved. Your email app should have just opened a new message addressed to the researcher with your responses pre-filled — please click "Send" in your email app to deliver them.
If no email opened automatically (or you want to send it later), click the button below to retry, or attach the downloaded CSV file and email it to the researcher.
For every statement (S01 through S36), the CSV records the grid position you placed it in — anywhere from −5 (least like how I feel) to +5 (most like). The wide CSV has one row with 36 placement columns; the long CSV has one row per statement.
